Breaking my Diet With– a Meatball Sundae?

I’ve been on a book diet for the past year. I’ve had a few slip ups (OK more than a few), but basically I’ve managed to keep my voracious appetite for business books in check by snacking on bunch of other genres while I was finishing up my book. The problem is that any time I read anything, an article, a blog post, a headline even, it generates thousands of spin off ideas that I just gotta add to my book. I’m pretty sure that I’ll be pulling it off the shelf in bookstores and writing new paragraphs in the margins… you can see why a book diet was in order. But now that Step Into The Spotlight! is safely in the warehouse waiting to be shipped to bookstores on April 8, I’m ready to break it. And what better to start the binge with than a Meatball Sundae?
Haven’t even picked it up yet, but I must admit after just seeing the cover of Seth Godin’s latest effort, I’m salivating. More impressive than his body of work (which is impressive) is the fact that the guy walks his talk. Who else would stick on a Pinocchio nose like he did on the cover of All Marketers are Liars? Or print the book sideways with purple cow spots on it like he did with Purple Cow? Or give away his entire book free online like he
did with Unleashing the Idea Virus?
Business books tend to be one of the more conservative genres in publishing. They (you know, as in “they say”) want you to think outside the box, without actually leaving the inside of the box to do it. Delightfully ironic that Godin pulled off that feat, years ago, by literally sticking his book, Free Prize Inside, in a sealed Cracker Jack type box. I can hardly wait to see what he serves up this time. Later–gotta go see a man about a book…
